Homemade Marinara Sauce

Who loves Italian food, I know I do!!!  I love anything Italian.   I love the pasta, the marinara sauce, lasagna, spaghetti, alfredo sauce and lets not forget the bread.  So here I am cooking spaghetti for dinner and I just realized I have no spaghetti sauce in the pantry.  I was not in the mood to go to the store in fact it was my lazy day and I don’t even think I got out of pajamas.  So I got to looking on the internet for a quick and tasty marinara sauce that I can make for dinner.

I have never been a huge fan of Marinara sauce but when I saw few recipes online they were all basically the same recipe so I thought I would give it try.   At first I thought it was a little bitter and I was slightly worried it was not going to taste good with my pasta.  But  once I added it to the pasta, my taste buds started ringing!!   It was so so good!  I’m thinking there will no longer be any jarred spaghetti sauce in this house.   This tastes so much better.


Homemade Marinara Sauce

  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup diced onion
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ tsp red chili flakes
  • ½ tsp dried oregano
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 28-ounce cans whole, peeled tomatoes
  • 2 Tbsp fresh chopped parsley
  • 2 dried bay leaves
  • ¼ cup chopped basil leaves
  • kosher salt and pepper
  1. In a large pot, add the olive oil, onions and garlic and cook until fragrant about 4 minutes. Remove from heat. In a large bowl add canned tomatoes. With your hands gently squish the tomatoes util they fall apart. (This part was fun, get the kiddos to help. But be careful some of those tomatoes are squirters) Add tomatoes into onion and garlic, along with all other ingredients. Cook on medium heat, covering with lid. Stirring occasionally for about 30-45 minutes. If you don't want it chunky add to a food processor and your desired thickness.

    • That’s a great idea! That im not sure. I’m sure it will need to some lemon juice or something to keep from spoiling. I have never tried it with this recipe unfortunately. If you try it, let me know!

  4. This sounds great. My mother grew up in Italy so I’m a bit of a sauce snob, having never eaten the jarred stuff until I was in my late teens. Simple is best and most people forget that, when creating a sauce. This sounds pretty similar to how I make my sauce. Great job!
