Dutch Oven Potatoes

I love this time of year!!  We love to go camping as a family and just spending time in the outdoors.   This past weekend we went to a small lake.  It was perfect you could only paddle board, paddle boat and kayak. Oh, and by the way im now addicted to paddle boarding and now I need to buy one!   While we were camping I love to get out of dutch ovens and cook some amazing meals.  One of our favorites is Dutch Oven Potatoes.  We love them for dinner or even modify the recipe a bit and turn them into breakfast.

Dutch Oven Potatoes

I wish when we were camping I would have thought to take more pictures but it was a last minute idea and I took the pictures on my iphone!

But to start making these Dutch Oven Potatoes I made sure my dutch oven was ready and I got my briquettes going.  I had about 10-12 briquettes on the bottom and about 8-10 briquettes on top.

First I cut my bacon into bite size pieces and paced them into the dutch oven to get them cooking.  I like my bacon a little more crunchy but cook your bacon until its the way you like it.   Once that is done I added about 1/2 onion and about 4-6 sliced potatoes.   I then added about 1/2 stick butter and seasonings ( garlic powder, season salt, salt and pepper)

Then for about an hour just sit back in your camping chair and enjoy your company!   At about the 45 minute mark I gave them a nice stir and checked on the pototoes and they were ready so I added on the cheese!

These Dutch Oven Potatoes are perfect for camping!
  • 4-6 potatoes, rinsed and sliced
  • ½ onion, sliced
  • 1 pound bacon
  • ½ stick butter
  • 1 tsp season salt
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • dash of salt and pepper
  1. Cut bacon in to bite size pieces, place into heated dutch oven
  2. Wash and slice potatoes and slice onions. When bacon is done add to dutch oven. Add butter and seasoning on top.
  3. -12 briquettes on top and 8-10 briquettes on bottom
  4. Cook until tender and cover with cheese

Now to clean your dutch oven just wipe out most of remaining food and then fill to the top with water.   Place back on top of the briquettes and bring to boil until clean.  Lightly drizzle with olive oil and rub around.   Now your dutch oven is clean and ready for the next meal!
